Tim Horton's offers gluten-free macaroon

Share |

Being gluten-free on the road can be hard, and Tim Horton's is working to give celiacs and the gluten-intolerant a chance for a treat away from home. Following the lead of Dunkin' Donuts, the Canadian-based cafe released a gluten-free macaroon last month in its U.S. locations. The individually wrapped package contains two coconut macaroons drizzled in chocolate. The company has had the product vetted by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, and keeps them in their own sealed plastic to prevent cross-contamination. For the pair, it's only $1.29, a steal for those of us used to spending a little more on gluten-free treats.

As an avid coffee drinker, and former doughnut connoisseur, I was delighted to have the chance to sample these tasty treats. Like a traditional macaroon, the base is coconut. I, personally, am not a big fan of coconut, but I liked these macaroons. They are sweet, with a touch of chocolate, and a perfect companion for a large cup of coffee. My husband is a coconut fiend, and absolutely loved them.

Right now, the macaroons are only available in-store, and while Tim Horton's has over 800 American locations, none of them are very close to Chicago, which is a shame. If you have a Tim Horton's near you, I suggest checking out these yummy macaroons - it's always nice to support a restaurant willing to do gluten-free in a safe, delicious manner!
